Lifeline Sweetcorn

Research for Vilmorin

A water reserve within the cob

Developed using biotechnology, this sweetcorn can regulate its own water consumption. A row of kernels is replaced by casings that fill with water drawn from the soil when it is available. This reserve, a true lifeline, redistributes water within the cob during periods of drought, allowing it to mature even in difficult climatic conditions.

A spicy tasting experience

Lifeline sweetcorn also offers something for the palate: during cooking, the membranes burst and release spices. Photo credit: Hervé Ternisien
