Out of context and conviviality
A choreographer? Alain Platel rejects the label. Many of his works set to musical scores by Bach or Monteverdi might even place him within opera. Yet for someone who continually questions social norms and the limits of body and consciousness, no category will ever fit. The aptly named Out of context, a tribute to Pina Bausch, is a case in point: he returns to essentials, bodies and simple orange blankets as clothing. Taken down and spread on the floor with the meal they contain, the blankets become objects of conviviality.
